<p>Sergey Brin, co-founder at Google spoke at last Novembers Web 2.0 Summit on the emergence of Googles social layer Google+ and Google+ Pages. Surely the creative minds at Google wont ignore the influence social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have had on its users.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Only up until 2009 was PPC and SEO the hotness that business owners were drooling over. And since then, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have made a powerful mark in the way we interact with, learn from, and sell to people.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Social media sounds like nothing new to most everyone who has been Facebooking and Tweeting for years now. But to think of social media as a means of gaining new business is to have the golden ticket. New York bestselling author, Gary Vaynerchuk wrote a book called CRUSH  IT explaining why it is so important in this day and age to be involved with social media as a business. Vaynerchuks main takeaways are engage deeply, do it however long it takes, and build a personal brand.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The key to building any brand is to have it so people relate to it. If the brand is a guy who offers his own services, people will subscribe to him if they relate themselves to him. If it is a company brand, people need to relate to that branded message. Could there be a better branded message delivery system than social media?</p>

<p>Well probably not. But do branding initiatives play a role in how effective social media can be as an advertising medium? The director of Keyword Search Pros, a Los Angeles PPC management firm, Peter Dulay says,</p>

<p>Sure it does. A company building a brand or that has one already will do much better with social than the company who is simply selling their product or service. We have clients that range from hugely branded to unbrandable. Unbrandable means the buying cycle is so short that buyers never have time to relate to the company. Its just search, find, and buy. Kind of like a fiber optic transciever. When you are looking for a fiber optic transceiver, youre not thinking you know just perfect company for that. You have to search and find. Thats unbrandable. And quite frankly, people dont want to spend time relating to a fiber optics company. They want to relate to Sues Cheesemaking Co, Smith Nursery, and Nike.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>What Dulay has illustrated is that as one goes from being brandable (even as a small company) to being not easily brandable, the reliance on more traditional forms of internet marketing becomes more common. However, as one moves more toward brandable, one does not necessarily find themselves unable to effectively execute marketing like SEO and PPC. Theyre actually able to leverage both more effectively.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Last year, Googles new search algorithm update, Panda and all its new versions have been increasingly weighing available social metrics to determine ranking priorities in search engine results pages (SERPs). Google has made it public that as time goes on, it will continue to rely more heavily on social indicators because they tell a more accurate story of what people like and dont like. Also because social trends are very hard to emulate artificially, the user experience and results will be improved on the search engine.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Dulay comments further,&#13;<br />
<br />&#8220;Social is becoming increasingly important for most companies. It is important because most companies need to be building or maintaining a brand and following. But in no way is social media a replacement for PPC and SEO. At least not yet anyway. Social media is actually doing a lot to enhance SEO. Eventually they may be almost one and the same. But today it remains a small weight in the overall ranking factors. And PPC? Well we know Googles not letting that go anywhere. Our PPC clients are still spending more every year because theyll make more sales that way. Whats interesting is that no one really talks about SEO and PPC like they used to. Advertisers do them because even today, they both make businesses a lot of money. They have become the old ball and chain&#8230; irreplaceable.  And social media is the newer and sexier kid on the block.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Dulay admitted that social media is becoming more attractive to advertisers but said his clients wouldnt sacrifice one dollar of pay per click budget for it. Any advertisers wanting to have Keyword Search Pros do their social media management would definitely be talking about additional budget allocations. His reasoning was that advertisers doing PPC management and SEO, if done properly, would yield greater results often at the rate of 20:1 over social media marketing.</p>

<p>Social Media, for the bulk of advertisers, is still auxiliary to PPC and SEO. Dulay has confidence many companies will adopt social media in the upcoming years. He is preparing for it be around for a long time though he says its probably only about 2-3 years before it loses its sex appeal to something younger and hotter than social.</p>
